SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS IN AGEGE LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF LAGOS STATE

ABSTRACT

The study found out the relationship between school environment and student’ academic performance in secondary schools in Agege, Lagos state, the achievement levels of students in schools still remain low in Nigeria. Among the factors that have been identified as outcomes in learning are: poor method of instructional material, teacher’s attitude, Laboratory inadequate and poor science background knowledge. A quasi experimental design was adopted for the study. The population was made up 2101 people with a sample size of 210 students and teachers in secondary schools in Agege, Lagos state, Nigeria. four research questions and four hypotheses guided the research work. The data were analyzed on the basis of the hypotheses, using independent samples t-test, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Pearson Product moment correlation. Arising from the findings, It is realized that, if schools in Agege had good teaching materials, fit classrooms and teachers, the achievement of students will be better than what we have now in our secondary schools.
